History and Recreation

Rolling mountains with sparse greenery

2,326-acre Michael D. Antonovich Regional Park at Joughin Ranch is located on the southern slopes of the Santa Susana Mountains between Chatsworth and Simi Valley. The park offers stunning vistas, rolling hills, oak and walnut woodland, water sources, and an abundance of wildlife. Throughout the park, majestic views of the San Fernando Valley; the Santa Monica, Totopa, and Santa Susana Mountains; and the Simi Hills abound. The rolling topography of the park includes grasslands, chaparral and woodlands of oak, ash, walnut, sycamore and some big-cone Douglas fir. Several threatened plant species, such as the slender mariposa lily and the Santa Susana tarplant, are found in and around the park. The surrounding area provides optimal foraging and nesting habitat for many raptors, including golden eagles, great horned owls, northern harriers and red-tailed, prairie and Copper’s hawks. The wilderness area abuts Rocky Peak Park, a 4,815-acre wilderness park to the west.

Chatsworth Park South includes more than 100 acres  of the rocky landmark Simi Hills adjacent to the Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park, a 174-acre National Register of Historic Places property consisting of historic features and deposits, prehistoric village site remnants, and portions of the Old Santa Susana Stage Road, which was the main route for mail and travelers between Los Angeles and San Francisco from 1861 until the opening of rail connections between the two cities in 1876. The park has miles of horseback, jogging, and hiking trails, picnic tables and barbecue pits, and bouldering outcrops. Chatsworth Recreation Center facilities are located within the lower area of Chatsworth Park South, with lighted indoor basketball courts, lighted outdoor basketball courts, a children’s play area, an indoor gymnasium, a stage, and lighted tennis courts.

Lumpy mountain in a desert

Stoney Point Park is a natural rock outcropping, geographic promontory landmark and legendary bouldering and rock climbing location on 76-acre. Stoney Point is a popular destination for hikers, equestrians and also with rock climbers because of its large boulders, which afford many opportunities to practice the sport of bouldering. The top of the rock formation offers excellent views of Chatsworth, the Santa Susana Mountains, Coyote Pass, and the entire San Fernando Valley.
